20 Years of Impact: Noloholo and Sharing Knowledge for Conservation
As African People & Wildlife celebrates 20 years of community-led conservation, we are sharing key stories from our 20 Years of Roar anniversary impact report. This series reflects on where we have come from and what lies ahead, including the progress we will share from 2025 as our programs continue to evolve. Sharing Knowledge at Noloholo
Built stone by stone on land generously donated by the Maasai community, the Noloholo Environmental Center embodies the spirit of locally led conservation. Initially a campsite with a hodgepodge of tents and tarps, it has evolved into a hub of innovation and learning, uniting people with a shared commitment to coexistence.
At Noloholo, local students explore the natural world through summer camps, field trips, and retreats for our scholarship recipients. These experiences spark their passions and equip young leaders with tools to protect their heritage. One former student, Moses, says, “After completing my A-level studies, I joined university to study wildlife management, and I hope to use the knowledge I gained as one of APW’s scholars to teach my Maasai community how to resolve human-wildlife conflicts.”
Beyond youth, Noloholo unites our team, community members, and practitioners to share experiences and tackle conservation challenges using our ACTIVE Community Engagement model. The center increasingly serves as both a place of discovery and a beacon for scalable, sustainable solutions, with trainees applying this approach in countries like Botswana, Angola, Uganda, and Zambia.
As we near the completion of the campus, investments in staffing and technology infrastructure will bring this vision to life, establishing Africa’s first Center of Excellence for Holistic Conservation. This next chapter will amplify Noloholo’s influence, empowering leaders to transform conservation efforts across the continent.
