Behind the Numbers: APW’s 2024 Annual Report is Here
This past year underscored a truth we’ve always known at African People & Wildlife: balance is essential but rarely easy. In 2024, communities across northern and central Tanzania overcame significant challenges, from extreme weather and crop losses to the complexities of growing populations. Yet, despite these pressures, together we achieved remarkable progress.
This year’s highlights reflect the dedication and resilience at the core of our work:
- Community-Led Coexistence: Across our landscapes, APW-supported teams responded to over 2,000 human-wildlife conflict incidents. From installing 105 new Living Walls protecting over 1,000 people and their livestock, to reducing elephant-related crop damage by 52% in Ngorongoro, coexistence is truly possible.
- Women’s Empowerment: Our Women’s Beekeeping Initiative continued to flourish. With more than 2,000 hives monitored and income reinvested into local families, women across the Maasai Steppe are leading conservation from their own communities.
- Grasslands Recovery: Local grazing committees have now restored over 10,200 acres of critical habitat. Using innovative, community-driven methods, APW teams and pastoralists revitalized grasslands, benefiting livestock, wildlife, and the health of entire ecosystems.
These accomplishments are stories of change, partnership, and shared commitment. None of this would be possible without our supporters and the communities who are at the heart of APW’s conservation mission.
As we celebrate 20 years of community-led conservation, the team is more committed than ever to making every contribution count. This work runs on trust, hard work, and the belief that change starts with local people. Your support goes directly to the heart of the work.
